Description

Petasites japonicus, commonly known as Japanese Butterbur, is a striking, moisture-loving perennial grown for its massive, architectural foliage. Known for its bold presence, this plant produces huge, rounded leaves—often 40–60 cm across—that create an instant tropical or woodland feel in shaded gardens. In early spring, before the leaves emerge, it sends up curious pale green to creamy flower spikes, adding an unusual seasonal interest.

In Australia, Petasites japonicus thrives best in cooler to temperate climates, particularly in regions with consistent moisture, such as Victoria, Tasmania, the Southern Highlands, ACT and cooler parts of NSW. It prefers part shade to full shade and performs beautifully along pond edges, streams, damp gullies, or shaded garden beds where the soil stays rich, cool, and moist.

Growth Habit:

A vigorous rhizomatous perennial that forms large clumps over time. Its spreading nature means it should be planted where space allows or contained to prevent unwanted spreading.

Ideal For:

– Shady, lush garden designs

– Woodland and fernery areas

– Moist, boggy or water-adjacent positions

– Creating bold, dramatic foliage contrast

Care Notes (Australia):

Provide constant moisture, deep, rich soil, and protection from hot, drying winds. In warm Australian summers, ensure mulching and regular watering to prevent leaf scorch. Best grown where winter cold helps trigger fresh spring growth.
