Description
Nyssa aquatica, commonly known as water tupelo, thrives in waterlogged environments where few trees survive. This deciduous species develops a distinctive swollen base that tapers into a straight trunk—a feature prized by woodcarvers for its exceptional timber quality. Mature trees reach 10-15 metres in Australian gardens, displaying dark glossy foliage that transitions to golden yellow each autumn. The tree produces fragrant white-green flowers that attract bees and support honey production, followed by dark purple fruits favoured by wildlife. Native to the floodplains and swamps of southeastern North America, from Florida to Missouri, Nyssa aquatica demonstrates remarkable resilience in flood-prone conditions and standing water, making it an excellent choice for wet sites where conventional trees struggle.
