Description

Ilex crenata (Japanese Holly)
Ilex crenata, or Japanese Holly, is a dense, evergreen shrub with small, rounded, glossy green leaves that resemble boxwood, making it a popular alternative for hedging. It grows to 1–3 metres in height and 1–2 metres in width, depending on the variety. This holly is dioecious, requiring male and female plants for berry production, although its tiny black fruits are less prominent than those of other holly species.

It thrives in Australia's cooler regions, preferring well-drained soil and a sunny to partly shaded position.

Tip: Prune regularly to maintain its compact form, and avoid planting near bushland areas to protect native species.
