Description
Ilex aquifolium 'Golden Milkmaid' (Golden Variegated Holly)
Ilex aquifolium 'Golden Milkmaid' is an evergreen shrub or small tree known for its vibrant, golden-yellow variegated leaves that contrast beautifully with its dark green foliage. This ornamental holly can grow up to 4–6 metres in height and 2–4 metres in width, making it ideal for hedging, privacy screens, or as a standout specimen plant.
It thrives in Australia's cooler, temperate regions, preferring well-drained soil in a sunny to partly shaded position. While it produces small, bright red berries in winter, it may require a male pollinator to ensure fruiting.
Tip: Prune regularly to maintain shape and control spread, particularly in areas like Tasmania or cooler highland zones, where holly can naturalize. The berries are attractive to birds but toxic to humans and pets. Avoid planting near native bushland to protect local ecosystems.
