Euscaphis japonica (also known as Korean Sweetheart Tree or Chinese Sweetheart Tree) is a striking small deciduous tree or large shrub, valued for its decorative foliage and eye-catching seed capsules.
Euscaphis japonica is a unique ornamental tree reaching 4–8 metres high, ideal for temperate regions of Australia, including cooler parts of NSW, Victoria, and Tasmania. It features glossy green leaves divided into multiple leaflets, creating a lush, tropical appearance. In summer, it produces clusters of small yellow-green flowers, followed by vibrant red, lantern-like seed pods that split open to reveal shiny black seeds — a dramatic display into autumn.
This tree provides strong seasonal interest, including subtle autumn foliage colour. It prefers a sunny to part-shaded position in well-drained soil, and benefits from occasional watering during dry spells once established. It is tolerant of light frost and can be grown as a feature tree or in a large garden bed.
