Description
Cornus sanguinea 'Midwinter Fire' displays vibrant new stems in winter, bursting with shades of orange, red, and yellow. In spring, its yellow-green foliage is complemented by flat-topped clusters of small white flowers, followed by dark purple drupes in summer. This deciduous shrub, growing 1.5 to 2 metres tall, also boasts a striking golden autumn colour. Introduced to Tasmania by Ron Radford, it supports wildlife such as the case-bearer moth and various frugivorous birds that feed on its berries. Native to Europe and western Asia, it is valued in organic gardening and permaculture for protecting orchard crops.
