Description

Aristotelia serrata (Wineberry or Makomako)

Aristotelia serrata is a fast-growing deciduous tree native to New Zealand but adaptable to various climates, making it a potential choice for Australian gardeners. Reaching up to 10 meters in height, it features slender, graceful branches and serrated, dark green leaves that create a light, airy canopy.

In spring, small, bell-shaped flowers emerge in shades of pink to white, attracting pollinators. These are followed by clusters of dark purple-black berries in late summer, which are a favorite of birds and can be used to make jams or wines.

This species thrives in well-drained, fertile soil and prefers a sunny to partially shaded position. It is tolerant of mild frost but may require protection in regions with harsh winters. Wineberry is well-suited to coastal and temperate areas of Australia, particularly in zones with moderate rainfall.

Uses: Ideal for native gardens, as a feature tree, or for rewilding projects to attract wildlife.
