The Nordmann fir or Caucasian fir. Soft glossy dark green leaves, distinctly with two blue-white bands of stomata below. A large evergreen conifer reaching 40-70 metres.
The cones can be 10–20 cm long and 4–5 cm wide. This species is sensitive to extreme dry and heat compared to some other Firs, homolepis, alba and koreana are more tolerant comparatively.
Nonetheless a wonderful tree of extreme beauty and stature. It is endemic to mountains with rainfall exceeding 1000 mm. Natural range; mountains sth & east of the Black Sea in Turkey, Georgia & the Russian Caucasus. Can be found at altitudes of 900–2,200.
Makes a splendid and natural Christmas Tree.
