Summer dormant perennial climber. Red scarlet , hanging flowers with vibrant purple lips in winter-spring. Unique red coloured root tuber and can grow in one season up to 2 or 3 metres before becoming summer dormant.
It’s five sepals red, orange or yellow tipped with a purple band, extend backwards in a red spur. The green to yellow rounded petals are quite small & have a clawed base.
Foliage nearly circular with five or six deeply cut lobes. The flowers are edible as are tubers , flowers pretty up your salad or can embellish your cocktails.
Family: Tropaeolaceae … Endemic to Chile , where it’s called called soldadito rojo and relicario.
Can tolerate cold , but protect from frosts.
