Trees and Shrubs

Stachyurus chinensis Magpie Beautiful and unusual deciduous shrub with tall arching branches , reaching 2-3 metres tall and 1-2 metres wide. The purple to red stems and white/green variegated leaves are long and pointed ( cream white margins and red tinted new growth ). The long streamer racemes of cream-to-yellow flower catkins in early spring typical of the species. Makes a bold statement cascading over a path or bank. Semi shade with deep summer watering. Frost hardy chinese shrub , that deserves more attention in Australian gardening. Introduced by Arnold Teese to Australia.

stachyrus praecoxis a large deciduous shrub with unique and colorful late winter early spring flowers ,blooming before the foliage. Flower buds form in autumn in pendulous racemes. Each flowering raceme up to 4” with up to 10-20 bell-shaped yellow-green flowers. This large shrub grows to 3-4 metres tall upright, yet arching habit. During the growing season, stems Can have chestnut brown color. Foliage may turn rosy red through yellow in autumn. Common name Spiketail which makes a great woodland specimen or south facing shrub , can be trained to wall for great effect and even espaliered. Native to Himalayas and Eastern Asia.

A selection with pink-tinged flowers from red buds is grown under this name.

A graceful, medium-sized, spreading shrub with arching shoots and bronze young foliage. Narrowly linear, evergreen, willow-like, finely toothed and short-stalked leaves are up to 20cm long and 1.5cm across, tapering to a long, slender point. Flowers pale yellow, in pendant racemes. An excellent foliage plant but inferior to s.praecox in flower.

A small to medium-sized shrub of dense habit, with slender, warm brown, zigzag stems. Leaves 2.5-7.5cm long, ovate, incisely toothed and lobed.. Flowers greenish white in crowded panicles in june. Japan, korean peninsula.

A medium-sized shrub producing long, arching, rich brown stems. Leaves broadly ovate or triangular, 7.5-13cm long, 3-5 lobed and incisely toothed. An elegant shrub with stouter growths and larger leaves then S.incisa, the flowers also are a little larger though not showy.

Strobilanthes gossypinusthis is a unique grey-green foliaged small evergreen shrub that brings texture and color and leaf contrast to a garden border. I always have the feeling a gifted artist has touched the leaves with a dusting of gilt gold dust and cinnamon , then a light silver spray , the most unusual foliage collage I've seen. It is drought tolerant and can cope with coastal salt winds and light frost.

An attractive, small open-branched tree. Leaves broad, ellipic or almost orbicular, oblique at base, 10-13cm long. Flowers white, with a central cone of yellow anthers, borne in long, laz, downy racemes in june. A lovely species, similar in some respects to S. obassia, but differing in its less downy leaves and exposed.

Styrax japonicaA truly elegant small layered branched deciduous woodland tree. In spring masses of small white bell flowers hang delightfully beneath the horizontal branches. In Autumn golden autumn tones and hanging small seed capsules. E. Asia - China, Japan, Korea.
